The World Health Organization reports that “Close to 800,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. Suicide is a global phenomenon and occurs throughout the lifespan. Effective and evidence-based interventions can be implemented at population, sub-population, and individual levels to prevent suicide and suicide attempts. There are indications that for each adult who died by suicide, there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.”

In South Africa, suicide is a significant concern, with 9% of all teen deaths attributed to it. Alarmingly, the fastest-growing age group affected by suicide includes young people under the age of 35, with a noticeable peak in female suicides between the ages of 15 to 19.

Understanding Self-Harm

Some counsellors prefer not to use the term suicide, opting instead for self-harm. Self-harm is defined as an act of deliberate self-poisoning or self-injury, regardless of motivation. Self-harm mortality refers to deaths resulting from such acts.

Youth at Risk

Youth are particularly vulnerable due to numerous social, economic, and health challenges that contribute to self-harm behaviours. Factors include:

- Emotional and mental stress from high unemployment rates and poverty.

- Health issues such as HIV/AIDS.

- Educational difficulties and physical or emotional abuse.

- Parental separation and substance abuse.

- Previous suicide attempts, which increase vulnerability.
